Dr. Carlo Urbani, who died
on March 29th of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome is mourned
by his family and his many friends and colleagues both inside and beyond
the United States system. He was a dedicated physician, an expert in
communicable diseases and the first to recognize that the outbreak of a
virus in Ha Noi was something beyond the ordinary.
For many years our friend
Carlo, an Italian national, who was just 46, served on the front line of
medical care and research, dedicated to eth objectives of the United
Nations through the World Health Organization, and also to the efforts
of Medecins Sans Frontieres. His particular expertise was in the areas
of parasitic diseases. His energy and commitment in helping to identify
the SARS virus contributed directly to increased global surveillance
and, in Ha Noi, promoted a co-operative effort between local health
authorities and the international community that directly contributed to
controlling the spread of SARS in Vietnam. Without his courageous and
dedicated work, the lives of many Vietnamese and others living in Ha Noi
would have been at risk from an expanding SARS epidemic.
He was highly regarded and
appreciated by many, whether for his unflappable professionalism, his
personal warmth and joy in in life. All of us in the united Nations
system, whether we work to reduce poverty, secure health, promote human
rights or contribute to some equally important challenge, will be guided
by his generous spirit. We join with his many friends, including the
entire Italian community in Hanoi, in remembering Carlo with abiding
affection. Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife, Giuliana Chiorrini,
his children and family.
